The most important thing is finding the treatment that works for you

I’m Dr. Guy Phillips and I’m delighted to be a part of the Marysville community. I’m a life-long Ohio resident and graduated from high school in Carey, Ohio.
Dr Guy Phillips, Marysville Chiropractic
I earned my degree of Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa. I also hold an MS in Sports Administration from the University of Kansas in 2007 and completed my undergraduate work at The Ohio State University, earning a B.S in Athletic Training in 2005.

Throughout my career, I’ve focused on human performance and care. While at the University of Kansas, I worked with the athletic department as a Certified Athletic Trainer caring for the university’s student athletes. I spent three years with Kansas Community College in Kansas City as Assistant Athletic Trainer. While attending Palmer Chiropractic College, I served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the college’s men’s rugby team, earning three national Final Four appearances in the Division I Club League.

I’m proud to uphold the high standard of care set by Cowgill Chiropractic. I hold certifications with the American Red Cross, Active Release Technique, and Graston Technique.

My focus on human performance has taught me that the most important thing is finding a therapy that works for you and your needs. I try to match technique to patient, ensuring that each of my patients enjoys safe, effective treatment. The majority of my adjustments use techniques such as Diversified, Thompson Drops, Flexion distraction, and Side posture; however, I’m proficient in all major modalities. If you’ve suffered an injury or just not feeling in optimum health, let’s get your health back on track together.

The Cowgill family has been in the Chiropractic profession for over 60 years

The history of Cowgill Chiropractic is rooted in family, beginning with Dr. Edward F. Cowgill of Richwood. Edward (Ed) set the standard for the way we treat patients; insisting on only using the highest quality equipment and practicing safe and proven methods. This was the foundation of his practice and nothing was more important to him.

As Ed’s business grew, Ed’s son Kevin, started to express interest in the business. Ed began mentoring Kevin and encouraged him to live by his values and pursue his own practice. Ed retired in 1982 and soon after Kevin claimed the title of Dr. Kevin Cowgill. Kevin has now been providing the residents of Union County with holistic family care for nearly 30 years. Kevin’s mission has been to demonstrate the importance of quality care and a family atmosphere.

Cowgill Chiropractic is greatly appreciative of the Cowgill family. Their love of Union County and their efforts to help their patients influence our ambition to uphold the standard they set for our practice. We are honored to continue to serve their clients and carry on the legacy the Cowgill’s established.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors practice a form of health care that focuses on the relationships within the body’s structure, with a focus on the spine. Part of the chiropractic philosophy involves a belief that issues within the body’s natural structure can cause problems with the functions in other areas of your body, notably the nervous system. The spinal chord serves as the main structure of your nervous system by communicating information from the brain to the rest of the body.

Chiropractors believe that subluxation, a misalignment of the vertebrae in the spine, is the main cause of neck and back pain. They treat these misalignments with hands-on therapy called manipulation including: applied pressure, massage and manual adjustment of the vertebrae and joints.

Chiropractors also deal with other spinal problems such as invertebral disc conditions, sprains, strains and non-spinal problems such as joint issues, ankle, knee, elbow and shoulder pain caused by injury or other disorders.

The most important aspect of chiropractic care is the comprehensive approach to treatment, and management of chiropractic pain.

Ankle Injuries

We provide quality care and treatment for ankle injuries such as:

  • Ankle Sprain/Strain
  • Fractures
  • Post-Op Reconstruction
Care After Auto Accidents

If you have been in an auto accident, you may consider contacting our office to evaluate any trauma that may have occurred. We specialize in treating a wide range of auto accident injuries including whiplash, a common auto injury.

It is easy to sustain neck trauma when one car collides into the rear-end of another. The passenger in the front automobile has their neck jerked back quickly resulting in an injury we know as whiplash. Whiplash can include: strained muscles and/or ligaments, and spinal joint injuries. This kind of neck injury is often associated with tension type headaches and head pain as a result of cervical dysfunction.

Other symptoms of whiplash include: nausea, arm and shoulder pain, and tingling in the hands and fingers. As with any injury, it is important to get an evaluation shortly thereafter to rule out any serious injury. In most whiplash cases, injuries are surface ones to the tissue and ligaments.

If you think you may suffer from whiplash injury, please contact our office to schedule an appointment with one of our chiropractors today. We will gladly answer any of your questions and provide you with the best treatment options available to you. Proper management is critical in the recovery from whiplash injuries and to prevent future damage.

Back Decompression

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical procedure that alleviates pain caused by pinched nerves specially people suffering from pinched nerves as a result of herniated discs, degenerating discs, or sciatica and spinal stenosis. These patients have generally seen multiple doctors and have already undergone a variety of treatments and look to spinal decompression as a solution to the pain.

Spinal decompression works by reducing pressure inside the disc, restoring movement and function. Using a controlled machine, the injured discs are lightly stretched apart. The movement realigns disc bulges and herniated discs back to the center, relieving pain on pinched nerves. During the decompression, the pressure in the disc is removed and a suction effect is created pulling in oxygen, water and nutrients back into the center along with the discs helping to restore healthy nutrients to the affected area. Back decompression offers a non-surgical, non-invasive solution to severe back pain.

If you have severe back pain and think you may benefit from back decompression, please contact our office to schedule an appointment with one of our chiropractors today to determine the best treatment options available to you. We will gladly answer any of your questions.

Back Pain/Strain

Back pain is a common injury that can cause great pain and interfere with the daily functions of your life. Prior to the sudden onset of a back injury there is generally a pre-existing weakness within the internal structure of the spine. This weakness will then become vulnerable, triggering pain by the lifting of a heavy object, a sudden, quick movement or the sitting in a position for too long of a period.

Some causes for back pain include:

  • Bulging and/or herniated discs
  • Muscle spasms
  • Subluxations of the vertebrae
  • Strain and/or injury to the muscles or ligaments supporting the back
  • Small fractures to the spine from osteoporosis

We’ll first assess your injury through a hands-on review. Then we can treat your back injury in a number of ways. Your chiropractor may perform a chiropractic adjustment to improve functionality, reduce nerve inflammation and restore range of motion in the back. Other techniques that can be used include mobilization of the area, physical therapy modalities, exercises and patient education to provide a comprehensive treatment approach.

If you suffer from back pain, please contact our office to schedule an appointment today. We will gladly answer any of your questions and provide you with the best treatment options available to you.

Elbow Injuries

Foot Care

The foot is a common site for pain. Made up of many bones, it is easy for trauma and injury to occur. In treating foot pain, it is important to locate the source of the pain.

Toe adjustments and deep massage therapy of the muscles is a very effective form of treatment. Foot exercises are another important form of treatment that can help to relieve or eliminate foot pain. For sprained ankles, a holistic approach is taken to examine any previously untreated areas that might be in need to adjustments.

If you suffer from foot pain please contact our office to schedule an appointment with one of our chiropractors today. One of our qualified professionals will perform a physical exam to determine the best treatment options available to you. We will gladly answer any of your questions.

Many forms of headaches are linked to cervical spine disorders. When a vertebra becomes misaligned, sensitive nerves become irritated and produce symptoms that include head pain.

Of course there are other factors that can cause migraines and headaches, such as stress and alcohol. But a chiropractor takes a comprehensive approach to your treatment examining any potential trauma to the spine. Chiropractic adjustments are one solution in the treatment of headaches.

If you suffer from headaches, please contact our office to schedule an appointment today. We will gladly answer any of your questions and provide you with the best treatment options available to you.

Hip Injuries

We provide treatment for hip injuries such as:

  • Hip Sprain/Strain
  • IT Band and Hip Contracture
Hydromassage Therapy

Water is so pure and simple, yet it can do extraordinary things.

The therapeutic use of warm water, known as hydromassage, is a proven, natural remedy. The pressure of the warm water against your body creates an experience that is both rejuvenating and therapeutic.

The value of hydromassage goes far beyond the simple pleasure of warm water swirling around and massaging you. It’s actually very good for you. Where hydromassage is applied, you will notice a relaxation of the muscles, increased blood circulation and relief of muscular pain and tension.

Hydromassage relaxes tight muscles just like a professional hands-on massage only in less time and without the labor or embarrassment of having to undress.

Joint Problems

Arthritis is a condition that produces pain at the joints. In the most common cases, it is either an autoimmune disorder (Osteoarthritis) or occurs when the cartilage lining the surfaces of the joints wear out (Rheumatoid arthritis). Arthritis causes the joints to swell, resulting in pain and stiffness, loss of range of motion especially in the hands, feet, hips and spine.

The holistic approach of chiropractic care focuses on relieving pressure along the joints to help increase the range of motion, helping to relieve pain and pressure buildup along the joints. With chiropractic care, treatments enable the body to improve the range of motion with fewer restrictions. Chiropractic care also focuses on lifestyle adjustments to focus on overall health to reduce pain and help eliminate the need for pain medications. Some of theses treatments may include: exercise, massage therapy, weight loss and other alternatives to address accompanying arthritis issues.

If you suffer from joint pain please contact our office to schedule an appointment today. We can perform a comprehensive physical exam to determine the best treatment options available to you. We will gladly answer any of your questions.

Knee Pain

Knee problems are another common injury outside of back pain. Knee issues arise as a result of:

  • Overuse of the knee joint
  • Injury
  • Arthritic changes in the joint

Symptoms of knee injuries include: moderate to severe pain, swelling, and dysfunction of the knee.

We’ll perform a physical examination to identify the cause of knee pain. Additional testing such as x-rays, blood work and blood pressure measurement of the leg may be needed to pinpoint the source of pain.

If you are diagnosed with overuse of the knee joint, the treatment goal will be to reestablish balance of the muscles, restore movement and correct any misalignments. A brace can be used to reestablish alignment in the patella and knee joint.

If you have knee problems as a result of injury, then your chiropractor may recommend medication and/or physical therapy along with healthy lifestyle changes to prevent future occurrences. Knee pain as a result of arthritic changes in the joint is generally treated with anti-inflammatory medications along with lifestyle changes to reduce pain.

If you suffer from knee pain, please contact our office to schedule an appointment today. We will gladly answer any of your questions and provide you with the best treatment options available to you.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can relax muscles and help with a patient’s recovery process. Massage therapy is an integral part of our office practice and is recommended for a majority of our patients.

Although the massage is not generally covered by insurance, it does qualify under many flex spending plans.

Our doctors utilize specific therapies to reduce pain and inflammation when needed including moist, hot pads and ice.

Part of the chiropractor’s hands-on approach to comprehensive treatment is the practice of massage therapy. Using their knowledge of anatomy and physiology, your chiropractor manipulates the affected muscles with his hands. During this process, your chiropractor improves the function of the soft tissues including:

  • Muscles
  • Ligaments
  • Tendons and
  • Joints

If you think you may benefit from massage therapy, please contact our office to schedule an appointment with one of our chiropractors today. We will gladly answer any of your questions and provide you with the best treatment options available to you.

Neck Pain

Some common causes of neck pain include: trauma or an injury, high levels of stress, falling asleep in an awkward position, or as a result of whiplash injury during an auto accident.

Symptoms of neck pain include:

  • General pain in the neck area accompanied by some stiffness
  • Pain that extends down between the shoulder blades, out along the arms or up into the head
  • Muscles in the neck that are tense and sore to the touch
  • A prickling or tingling sensation in the arms and fingers

We’ll conduct an examination that can include testing the range of movement of the neck, testing for trapped nerves, examination of the muscles, and movement of the spine and neck. In some cases, x-rays or blood work may be performed to determine an exact diagnosis.

Sharp neck pain at the base of the skull generally disappears without any treatment. If your neck pain persists, manual chiropractic treatment based on the severity of your injury is suggested along with pain-relieving medication. Longer term chiropractic treatment is recommended for chronic neck pain.

If you suffer from neck pain, please contact our office to schedule an appointment today. We will gladly answer any of your questions and provide you with the best treatment options available to you.

Shoulder Injuries

  • Rotator Cuff
  • Impingment Syndrome
  • Shoulder Sprain/Strain

Cowgill Chiropractic has extensive treatments to relieve the pain and tension.

Sports Physicals

Sports physicals consist of two parts: a medical history and a physical examination. The goals of sports physicals are to evaluate an athlete’s general health, current fitness level, risk of injury, and physical well-being. Sports physicals are recommended for students and adults that are taking part in:

  • School or interleague sports program
  • Club sports teams
  • New fitness regimens

A sports physical allows a physician to identify any conditions that might keep the athlete out of the game or affect performance. Athletes should have a physical six weeks before the start of the sport season; however this can vary due to changing sport seasons. This timing provides an opportunity to address an existing injury or improve conditioning prior to participation in the activity.

Work Injuries

Work injuries can be devastating, emotionally, physically, and financially. The goal is to get the injured worker back to work because everyone gains when an injured worker is safely back on the job.

There is really no one particular type of injury, though the most common is neck and back injuries accounting for 90% of most of the injuries occurring at work. Repetitive stress injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome are also injuries that we treat on a regular basis. They are also the biggest cause work absenteeism and the largest expense for companies in the workers compensation arena

Other injuries that are common include: knee, hip and joint injuries, rotator cuff injuries, and a variety of back and neck sprain/strains.

Many occupations require a worker to perform the same motion dozens, hundreds or thousands of times each month. These repetitive motions often result in a cumulative type trauma. The onset of this type of injury is often gradual. Injuries that occur over time can actually be much worse than a sudden fracture or other work injury. The severity of the injury is not always known right away.

The primary goal is to get patients back into the workforce, however, never before they are actually physically prepared. It is important to receive proper care following a work injury, not only to stop the pain, but to restore the patient to comfortable and pain-free functioning. Without proper healing, it’s more likely that a work injury could later reoccur.

Chiropractic care continues to be one of the top treatment options for work-related injuries. Research studies sponsored by over a dozen state governments have proven time and time again that chiropractic is over twice as effective at getting injured workers back to work with half the disability and at half the cost. If you are the employer, it would only make sense that you should require all injured workers to be seen by a chiropractor first.

Our staff is experienced in helping you handle the details of a worker’s compensation case so that you can focus on getting better. Please contact us if you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment.
